Warnemünde Lighthouse: A sight with history

The expansion of the port was planned at the end of the 13th century, because Rostock was then considered the most influential city in the Hanseatic League. In the course of this, a beacon should also be created. However, it is not documented today whether there was actually a permanent lighthouse at this point in the years up to 1800. In 1836 a fixed lantern was erected 11,35 meters high. The lighthouse in its current form was built in 1898. The port construction director Karl Friedrich Kerner (1847-1920) is considered the builder of the lighthouse in Warnemünde. A plaque at the foot of the building commemorates him.

The beacon for the orientation of seafarers

Lighthouses are not only landmarks on the coast, they have three important tasks for seafaring:

  1. Navigation aid
The beacon enables a ship to determine its own position at sea exactly.

  2. Warning sign
Near a coast, lighthouses warn of reefs or sandbars and navigate ships safely through the harbor entrance.

  3. Marking of the fairway
Movable screens and color filters show the captain whether he is moving in a safe area.

A kerosene lamp was hung in the first wooden lighthouses or the pulling lantern in Warnemünde, which showed the sailors the way. In fog, other signals such as horn signals, bells or fog cannons were added.

When the lighthouse was built in its present form, it had a four-vat petroleum cellar. The petroleum had to be pumped up from there. In 1917 the switch to gas took place and the lighthouse in Warnemünde got its electric light in 1927. Today it is operated with an HQL lamp. In 1978 the light operation was automated, since then the presence of a lighthouse keeper is no longer required.
