Rostock Art Gallery

Contemporary art exhibitions set in idyllic parkland

A special place where not only international exhibitors but also local artists present themselves is the Rostocker Kunsthalle. Their exhibition history goes back to this year 1969 back when the Kunsthalle made a name for itself as the only new building and art museum in the GDR. Today the Kunsthalle is a Art museum and exhibition house equally. Shown here with priority contemporary exhibitions of national, international and regional artists.

A significant fund

In addition to the current exhibits, the Rostocker Kunsthalle also keeps one valuable pool of works of art and collections on. Among the most important pieces are the hand drawings by late Expressionists such as Bernhard Kretschmar or  Carl Lohse. The painting also dates from this period "Warnow fisherman" by the Rostock painter Egon Tschirch. When strolling through the city, you will always come across bronze figures by the Rostock sculptor JOh Yastram bump. Parts of his life's work are also in the inventory of the Kunsthalle Rostock. In addition to drawings and a painting by the artist Werner Tubke also includes works by the painter Otto Niemeyer-Holstein to the Rostock art treasures.

A visit to the exhibitions and events

Anyone interested in art and culture should visit the Rostock Art Gallery at least once during their vacation and see one of the current exhibitions. In addition to these contemporary presentations, the association organizes per art gallery regular events to which both locals and holidaymakers are cordially invited. These include, for example, public Lectures on current topics in the art scene, but also concerts that take place as part of the Jazz Festival in Rostock. Piano concerts can also be played on a large grand piano. A display depot is currently in the works, which is intended to expand the exhibition space of the Kunsthalle. After an interesting tour of the exhibitions in the Kunsthalle, the adjoining park around the swan pond invites you to take a leisurely stroll.

Contemporary art behind historical walls: The HMT in Rostock

If you visit the HMT on weekdays, you will mainly come across bustling students. Many of them carry musical instruments with them or try to practice the last passages of text from the play they are currently rehearsing. Especially in the late afternoon or early evening hours, the University of Music and Theater invites visitors to take a break from the multifaceted repertoire of the Rostock students to impress.

The moving story of the historic building

The HMT building alone is worth a visit. The St. Katharinenstift was destroyed in the great Rostock city fire in 17. century almost completely destroyed. The remaining remains of the wall of the central nave and the choir building have been used in very different ways over the years; among other things as an orphanage, as a military hospital, as a school and penitentiary. Only in the year 1995 the decision was made to turn this historic building into a University of Music and Theater to transform. Since 2001 In addition to the varied courses of study, theater performances, concerts and open-air performances also take place here in the monastery courtyard for visitors. Among the most famous graduates of the HMT include Armin Müller-Stahl, Katrin Sass and Caspar Franz.

The program of the HMT

In the HMT annually about 250 performances instead of. It is therefore worthwhile for every visitor to the Hanseatic City of Rostock, but also for the locals, to regularly take a look at the calendar of events. From traveling actors to the big theater

A look back at the Theater history of the Hanseatic city shows an eventful past. Up to that 19. century inside, the citizens were entertained here only sporadically by traveling actors. There was no fixed venue for the performances; sometimes it was just played on the market square, other times in the ballroom. end of 18. century a theater was built for the first time in Rostock, but it was destroyed again 100 years later by a fire. 1942/43 became the current building under the name ,Small house' inaugurated until then there were various venues in Rostock and Warnemünde where theater is still performed today.

The individual theaters and their schedules

The main building of the Rostocker Volkstheater is centrally located on Doberaner Straße. In the Great Hall there are up to 550 spectator place. All types of theater are performed here, so that you can see plays and hear philharmonic concerts in this hall. That belongs to the Big House Little comedy in Warnemünde. In a cozy atmosphere with only 10 tables, one-man plays, humorous comedies, satires or cabaret pieces are performed here. With snacks and drinks, the guests of the Baltic Sea resort experience multi-faceted performances in the small comedy. Other outdoor venues are also regularly used for the performances. This takes place every year in the summer months Summer theater in the monastery garden of the Monastery of the Holy Cross. But the Petrikirche or the IGA Park are also regularly chosen as venues.

Little comedy: humorous hours in a cozy atmosphere

The Little Comedy is a venue of the Rostock Volkstheater. While up to 550 guests can see a performance together in the big house, things are more tranquil in the Baltic Sea resort of Warnemünde. A total of 10 tables stand in front of a small stage, which can seat a maximum of 68 spectators. Small snacks and drinks can be enjoyed in the relaxed atmosphere during the performances.

Have a good laugh while on vacation

In the immediate vicinity of the Baltic Sea and the idyllic location in the middle of the historic alleys of the Baltic Sea resort, the schedule of the little comedy is more humorous. Here the guests are not offered heavy fare, but rather something entertaining and humorous for the little break on vacation. The program of the Little Comedy includes cheerful pieces, cabaret, monologues and two-person pieces

From the flea cinema to the popular evening program on vacation

The first performance of the Little Comedy was in the year 1914 played. Over time, the building served as a flea cinema, which many Warnemünde citizens still call it ,Starfish' is known. Since 1968 will the house again as second and only other venue of the Rostocker Volkstheater used and offers holiday guests in Warnemünde in particular a welcome change from everyday holiday life.

The Walter Kempowski Archive

After the death of Walter Kempowski, his estate is now in a historic Rostock monastery house near the university building. As the son of a Rostock shipowner, the passionate archivist and writer has a very special connection to the Hanseatic city. During your visit, you'll see a collection of draft novels, copies with working notes, and special items from his novels, such as the prison door behind which his mother was imprisoned for a long time. In his work, Kempowski was particularly concerned with the German chronicle. Rostock is always the backdrop and Documentation for the changes of the time as a mirror of German history.
